Call for Submissions

For Issue 13, Rusted Radishes turns its attention to tomorrow.

The past continuous of crises, wars, and genocide alongside rising fascism, ecological destruction, and technological transformations has blurred our conception of the future, abstracting its prospects and reshaping the way we imagine it. Rather than the expansiveness of the future, we are interested in the constrained temporality of the near future. If the present is shaped by an inexhaustible imagining of what might lie on the horizon, tomorrow offers a nearness on which to project ourselves in tangible ways.

Tomorrow both constrains the language of the literary and the visual as much as it may expand it, allowing for new articulations beyond the inadequacies of familiar political, aesthetic, emotional, ecological, technological, historical, and ethical vocabularies. It fragments time into shorter intervals of anticipation and repair. Unlike “the future,” with its attachment to teleologies, tomorrow remains open to the ordinary, the intimate, the vernacular, and the affective—to what is fleeting or not yet fully legible.

How do people inhabit the liminal space of waiting without understanding it merely as absence? What does the near future refuse to propose or resolve? How does imagination inhabit the interval between persistence and projection, maintenance and transformation, repetition and fissures? Does tomorrow tend towards a maybe, perhaps, or never? What does “tomorrow” mean in a world of daisy-chained tomorrows? What conceptions of life become possible when the future recedes and tomorrow becomes the dominant temporal horizon? What feels stable, what feels altered, and what already seems to belong to a disappearing past?

We welcome literature and art that engage critically and creatively with the temporalities of the near future, and with the structures of feeling that tomorrow makes possible. This issue will be highly selective, and accepted contributors will also be invited to share brief craft reflections on their submitted work.

Thanks to support from Hawthornden Foundation and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Beirut, all contributors will receive honoraria.

في العدد السنوي الثالث عشر، تنظر «مجلة فَمْ» إلى «بكرا».

لقد جعل التتابع المستمر للأزمات والحروب والإبادة، ناهيك بتجذّر الفاشية والتحولات البيئية والتكنولوجية، تصورنا عن المستقبل تصوراً أكثر ضبابية، وأضعف محاولات تخيّله، وجرّده من احتمالاته. فبدلًا من الانشغال باتساع المستقبل وانفتاحه، يهمّنا في هذا العدد استكشاف «بكرا» بوصفه إطارًا زمنيًا قريبًا وأقلّ تجريدًا.

يجزّئ «بكرا» الزمن إلى وحدات أقصر من الترقّب والإمكانات، ويحدّ لغة الأدب والفن بقدر ما يفتحها على احتمالات جديدة، فيتيح أشكالًا مختلفة من التعبير تتجاوز حدود المفردات السياسية والجمالية والعاطفية والبيئية والتكنولوجية والتاريخية والأخلاقية المألوفة. على خلاف «المستقبل»، بما يحمله من نزوع نحو الغايات والسرديات الكبرى، يبقى «بكرا» مفتوحًا على اليومي والحميمي والمحكيّ والعاطفي، وعلى ما هو آني، أو ما لم تتضح معالمه بعد.

كيف نسكن هذه المساحة الانتقالية خارج خطابات الغياب أو الخسارة؟ وما الذي يعجز «بكرا» عن تقديمه أو حسمه؟ وكيف تسكن المخيلة المسافة الفاصلة بين الصمود والتحول، وبين التكرار والتصدع؟ وهل يميل «بكرا» إلى الـ«ربما»، أم إلى الـ«ممكن»، أم إلى الـ«أبدًا»؟ وماذا يعني «بكرا» في عالم من الصباحات المتسلسلة؟ وما هي التصورات الممكنة للحياة حين يتراجع المستقبل ويصبح «بكرا» هو الأفق الزمني المهيمن؟ وكيف تؤثّر الحياة الافتراضية في الطريقة التي نتذكّر بها الماضي أو نتخيّل بها ما يأتي بعده؟ وما الذي يبدو ثابتًا، وما الذي يبدو وقد تبدّل؟ وما الذي يبدو اليوم وكأنه سينتمي إلى ماضٍ آخذٍ في التلاشي؟

نرحّب بالأعمال الأدبية والفنية التي تنخرط نقديًا وإبداعيًا في «بكرا»، وفي البنى الشعورية التي يتيحها المستقبل القريب. سيكون هذا العدد انتقائيًا إلى حد كبير، كما سيُدعى المساهمون فيه إلى مشاركتنا تأملات قصيرة حول العملية الإبداعية التي رافقت إنجاز أعمالهم.

تحظى استكتابات هذا العدد بدعم مؤسسة هاوثورندن وكلية الآداب والعلوم في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت.

OUR EDITORIAL VISION

Rusted Radishes: Beirut Literary and Art Journal  is a space for writers, artists, and translators whose work arises from, responds to, or is in conversation with the Arab world and the wider geographies, histories, and diasporas with which it intersects. Since its founding, Rusted Radishes has remained committed to publishing exceptional writers and artists for the first time alongside established voices. As editors, we work closely with our contributors to push the work further, refining it through close editorial collaboration. Ultimately, we seek writers and artists whose work carves new paths for thinking through contemporary questions and for crafting literature and art.

We read with care. We believe strong editorial relationships strengthen strong work, and accepted contributors should expect an engaged editorial process.

تستقبل فَمْ: مجلة بيروت الأدبية والفنية نصوصاً ومساهماتٍ لكاتبات وكتّاب تربطهم بلبنان أو منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا علاقة من خلال السكن أو العمل أو الاهتمامات الأخرى. تهدف مجلّتنا إلى خلق مساحة للكتّاب والفنانين، لتسليط الضوء على أعمالهم وجعلها متاحةً للجمهور الواسع، سواء بالنسبة لكتّابنا ومترجمينا وفنّانينا المخضرمين، أو للعدد الأكبر من كتّابنا الذين ينشرون للمرّة الأولى. 

تصدر فَمْ عن قسم اللغة الإنكليزية بالجامعة الأميركية في بيروت بدعم من كلية الآداب والعلوم وكلية مارون سمعان للهندسة والعمارة. وقد تمكّنّا، بدعم سخيّ من مركز الفنون والعلوم الإنسانية في الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، من إطلاق مجلتنا رقميّاً! وسيتيح لنا ذلك نشر مقالات بشكلٍ دوريّ على موقعنا،  في الوقت نفسه الذي نراجع فيه المساهمات المعدّة للنشر في المجلة المطبوعة. 

General Submission Guidelines

Rusted Radishes: Beirut Literary and Art Journal is a bilingual journal publishing in Arabic and English across both print and online platforms. We announce calls for submissions to our print issue on our website and social media channels. All work submitted through an open call will be considered for both print and online publication. Visit our Submittable portal to view current calls and submit your work.

PREPARING YOUR SUBMISSION

Attachment: Submit each writing piece as a separate .doc or .docx file. Artwork should be submitted as low-resolution digital files.
Bio: Provide a brief professional biography written in the third person, no longer than 80 words.
Formatting: Simply use a 12-pt font and double-space each prose piece. Retain the original form in your poetry.
Multiple submissions are welcome: Check the guidelines for each genre regarding submission limits. Contributors may submit across genres, but please limit your total submissions to two.
Name each submission ‘title_genre’: Include your full name and e-mail address on the top of the first page of the actual submission file.
Simultaneous submissions are welcome: In the case you need to withdraw work, do so through the Submittable submissions manager; or via submit@rustedradishes if the manager is unavailable to you.

TIPS AND POLICIES

    • Copyright reverts to contributors after publication; we ask only for a courtesy acknowledgment of first publication.
    • Translators are responsible for securing all author and publisher permissions related to the source work.
    • By submitting to Rusted Radishes, you agree to be added to our email lists. You may unsubscribe at any time.
    • When submitting through Submittable, add info@rustedradishes.com to your contacts or safe sender list to ensure that you receive correspondence from us.
    • After submitting, you may log in to your Submittable account at any time to check the status of your submission. If you have not received a response six months after submitting, you may contact us at submit@rustedradishes.com for an update.


Genre-specific Guidelines

We accept work in both Arabic and English; please submit work in either language to the appropriate genre.

 

Fiction

We welcome literary fiction in traditional, experimental, and hybrid forms. We are drawn to work that explores contemporary themes while demonstrating a distinctive voice, fresh vision, and careful attention to craft. We consider flash fiction, short stories, and unpublished novel excerpts. The maximum word limit is 5,000 words. Submit no more than one long-form and one short-form story.

 

 

Creative Nonfiction

We welcome creative nonfiction essays that are self-interrogative and reflective and that reach beyond the self to analyze or explore human conditions. We welcome a range of forms, including flash nonfiction, personal essay, literary journalism, visual essays, and unpublished memoir excerpts. The maximum word limit is 5,000 words. Submit no more than one long-form and one short-form essay.

 

 

Poetry

We welcome poetry in all forms, from traditional structures to experimental and hybrid works—including free verse, prose poetry, sonnets, villanelles, ghazals, and beyond. We are drawn to poems that transform experience and imagination into deeper inquiries into human conditions while expanding the conventions of poetic form. We seek poetry that engages the senses, pushes ideas, and moves beyond sentimentality. Submit up to five poems in a single document.

 

 

Translations

We welcome translations into Arabic and English from any language along with a translator’s note when possible. We are interested in translations that bring vital literary and artistic voices into new linguistic and cultural conversations. Please submit both the original work and translation, along with any required permissions. Translators are responsible for securing all author and publisher permissions regarding source texts. Submit up to three translations.

 

 

Artwork

We welcome visual art across a range of media, including but not limited to painting, illustration, collage, photography, sculpture, installation, textiles, ceramics, and digital media. We are interested in work that engages thoughtfully with materials, form, and ideas, and that pushes conventional ways of seeing.

Non-digital work should be scanned or photographed in high-quality digital files with signatures removed. Please submit works in low resolution; accepted contributors will be asked to provide high-resolution files (not exceeding 5 MB). Each submission should be attached as a .pdf, .eps, .jpeg, or .tiff file. Please submit up to five works.

 

 

Graphic Narratives

We welcome graphic narratives, comics, and excerpts from unpublished graphic novels. We are drawn to work in which image and text are inseparable—where each expands, complicates, or resists the other. Submit up to five works.

Submit as a PDF or as a series of .jpg images (scans or digital art) at 150 dpi. If accepted, higher-resolution files will be requested. The preferred dimensions are the Rusted Radishes print ratio (19.5 cm W × 24 cm L); otherwise, A4 format is acceptable. File size should not exceed 10 MB.

 

 

Drama

We welcome plays or performance pieces—including one-act and full-length works, translations, adaptations, monologues, dialogues, and other dramatic writings—that engage with and expand theatrical possibilities. We are drawn to dramatic writing that takes advantage of and/or subverts theatrical conventions. A written play is an essential component of theater, but not its entirety. We publish dramatic works with the hope that they will find their way into performance. Please submit up to two works.

 

 

Multimedia

We welcome multimedia works, including photo essays, video works, video essays, mini-documentaries, podcasts, and other forms that bring together image, sound, text, and moving media. Contributors may submit completed works or contact us with proposals for consideration.

          • تسمية الأعمال: يجب تسمية كلّ مساهمة بـ”عنوانها_نوعها”. الرجاء ذكر اسمكم الكامل وعنوان البريد الإلكتروني في الجزء العلوي من الصفحة الأولى من ملف التقديم.
          • المساهمات المقدّمة إلى أكثر من جهة: نرحّب بها وندعو المساهمين الراغبين في سحب أعمالهم القيام بذلك من خلال موقع Submittable، كما نرجو منهم الإشارة إلى القصيدة التي يرغبون في سحبها.

إرشادات خاصّة بالأنواع الأدبيّة

نستقبل الأعمال باللغتين العربية والإنكليزية- يرجى إرسال مساهماتكم ضمن الأنواع المناسبة الآتية:

 

القَصَص

نبحث عن أعمال قصصية على أنواعها، فنرحّب بالقصص ذات المنحى التقليدي كما نشجّع الأعمال الأكثر تجريباً من حيث الشكل أو المضمون. نستقبل الأقاصيص والقصص القصيرة جداً (350-1000 كلمة) ومقتطفات من روايات غير منشورة (1000-5000 كلمة). لا يمكن إرسال أكثر من عمل قصصي طويل واحد وعمل قصصي قصير واحد.

 

 

النصوص الإبداعية غير الروائية

على النصوص الإبداعية غير الروائية أن تعنى بالجماليات، أي أن تحاكي الفن وتتميّز عن التحقيقات أو المذكّرات. كما على الأصوات الأدبية أن تتميّز بالجاذبية والصدق والابتكار وأن يكون تأثيرها قويًا وذات  رؤية جديدة تتجاوز التجربة الفردية وتعكس التجربة الإنسانية الكبرى. يمكن إرسال جميع المقاربات والأساليب، سواء أكانت عبارة عن قصة أو مقالة ذاتيّة أو صحافة أدبية أو مقتطفات من مذكّرات. عدد الكلمات هو 5000 كحدّ أقصى. لا يمكن إرسال أكثر من عمل طويل واحد وعمل قصير واحد.

 

 

الشعر

نبحث عن الشعر في جميع أشكاله. يمكن إرسال خمس قصائد كحدّ أقصى في وثيقة واحدة.

 

 

الترجمات

نستقبل نصوصاً ومساهمات باللغة العربية، كما نستقبل مساهمات مترجمة من أي لغة الى الإنكليزية أو العربية. نرجو منكم تزويدنا بالنصين (الأصلي والمترجم) بالاضافة إلى حقوق النشر. في ما يتعلق بالعمل الأصلي، سيكون المترجِم مسؤولاً عن الحصول على إذن كلٍّ من المؤلف والناشر. يمكنكم إرسال ثلاثة نصوص مترجمة كحد أقصى.

 

 

العمل الفني

نرحب بأعمال من مجالات مختلفة، لا سيما الرسم والزخرفة والتصوير الفوتوغرافي والنحت وفن الملصقات والمنسوجات والسيراميك والوسائط الرقمية. يجب تصوير الأعمال غير الرقمية ووضعها في ملفات رقمية عالية الجودة (إرسال جميع الأعمال بدقة منخفضة، وإذا تم قبولها، يتم تقديمها بدقة عالية لا تزيد عن 5 ميغابايت). يجب إرفاق كل ملف على شكل .pdf أو .eps أو .jpeg أو tiff.  بإمكانكم إرسال 5 مساهمات كحدٍ أقصى.

 

 

القصص المصوّرة

نستقبل الرسومات والقصص المصوّرة أو مقتطفات من روايات الجرافيك غير المنشورة. يمكن تقديم خمس مساهمات كحدّ أقصى. على المساهمات أن تكون على شكل PDF أو .jpg  بمعدل 150 dpi (سنطلب دقة أعلى في حال قبول الطلب). الأبعاد (الحجم): يفضّل أن يكون متساوياً لحجم كتاب فَمْ: 19.5 سم (العرض) × 24 سم (الطول)؛ وإلا A4. حجم الملف: أقل من 10 MB.

 

 

المسرح

نبحث عن مسرحيات (أعمال من فصل واحد، أعمال كاملة، ترجمات، أعمال مقتبسة) تبني على المسرح التقليدي أو تسائله.

المسرح ليس التلفزيون.

المسرح ليس السينما.

المسرح هو المسرح.

المسرحية المكتوبة وحدها لا تشكّل مسرحاً ولا يمكن اعتبارها سوى جزء صغير منه. نحن نعتقد أن المسرحيات تبقى غير مكتملة إن لم تعرض، لذلك فإنّ هدفنا هو إلهام الناس لتأدية الأعمال التي ننشرها.

يمكن إرسال مسرحيّتين كحدّ أقصى.
